| It should be noted that the depths available in the channel have shallowed somewhat during the last 12 months and in
places the depth has reduced to about 0.3 metres at LAT. The following are the approximate minimum depths in the
channel at various tidal levels (in the absence of swell conditions and/or weather conditions): |
| Depth at MHWS = 5.1m; Depth at MHWN = 4.1m; Half-tide = 3.1m; Depth at MLWN = 2.1m; Depth at MLWS = 0.9m |
| When estimating the available depth due consideration should be given to the effect of any swell conditions existing at the
time. As any swell approaches the shoaling depths on the Bar the wavelength will shorten and the wave height will
increase. As a result the depth available can be reduced significantly in wave troughs. Due consideration should also be
given to the effects of weather. Winds between North and East will decrease the available depths, as will high
atmospheric pressure (an increase of 34 millibars over the standard pressure of 1013mb can reduce the depth by 0.3m).
For certain vessel types consideration should also be given to squat effect (this will have a more pronounced effect for
vessels with a relatively flat bottom, such as motor cruisers, and vessels operating at or near hull speed). As always it is
best to allow a safe margin for error when estimating the available depth. |
